When Is a Barrier Island Not an Island? When It Is Preserved in the Rock Record

چکیده

Existing barrier island facies models are largely based on modern observations. This approach highlights the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of systems, but it overlooks processes tied to geologic time scales, such as multi-directional motion, erosion, reworking, their expressions preserved strata. Accordingly, this study uses characteristic outcrop from paralic strata Upper Cretaceous Straight Cliffs Formation in southern Utah update for motion preservation include time-scale processes. Results indicate that key distinguishing architectural elements systems have very little do with “island” morphology observed systems. Four associations used describe characterize these elements. Barrier islands occur association backbarrier fill (FA1) internally contain lower upper shoreface (FA2), proximal (FA3), tidal channel (FA4). Three main (barrier shorefaces, shoreface-dominated inlet fill, channel-dominated fill) independently or combination create stacked deposits. shorefaces record progradation, while records lateral migration, aggradation within inlet. bound by lagoons estuaries distinguished other deposits internal geometry, facies, position transgressive successions. Tidal processes, particular, migration reworking shoreface, also distinguish In sum, expands provides new recognition criteria account complex geometries time-transgressive,

When Senescence Is Optimal and When It Is Not

A simple model is developed that captures the main features of life reproduction, growth and maintenance. These features are determined by a single state variable, vitality. The resulting optimal life-history strategies are classified with respect to the course of their characteristic age-trajectory of mortality. It is shown that the range of optimal life histories is wide. The main factors tha...

Providing hope in terminal cancer: when is it appropriate and when is it not?

Hope is essential in the face of terminal cancer. Generally in Western societies, patients and their families prefer their doctor to engage them in transparent, realistic, authoritative, empathic and open communication about the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer but this topic is not well studied in the Asian context. With the exponential increase in information about cancer and the many permut...

When is it an osteoclast?

Using acid phosphatase as a marker, osteoclasts were examined from single sections of undemineralised iliac crest biopsies from patients with renal failure and from normal controls. Eighty one per cent of the cells from controls and 56% of the cells from patients with renal failure appeared to be non-nucleated or mononucleated. Serial sections showed, however, that 73% of the control cells were...
